how t0 change the ring and pinion on a 66

  • Just wondering if anyone tried changing a ring gear without the pinion

Hypoid gears use teeth that slide against the teeth of the mating gear. This causes friction which the speced gear oil which is used, has to guard against.

And if you are running a 350 with the 700 R4 then you can run a up to a 4.10 ratio and still be steetable. But if the 350 is stock and used a 3.42 would probably be best.

The pinion shaft is the first item to install during a rebuild. You need to remove the top shaft with the synchro hubs to do this. To carry out any of the above, you need to drive shafts with a long drift, (sometimes a 10lb hammer is required to move them) from both the rear & front of the transaxle.

I wouldn't go looking for the slower 12/49 rear end, but the common 13/51 ring & pinion would be ideal, and is in between the 13/49 you have now & the slow 12/49. The classes are 11,000 and 12,500 lbs. Tires are 20.8-38. Stock speed trans gears as of now... You should be ok with that ratio.

Next time you have the lid off, count the teeth. You will find there are 9 on the pinion and 37 on the ring... = 4.111111111. That is the same as the 4.11 in the '66 rearend. It is unclear why GM so loosely interchanged "4.10" with "4.11" in their labeling (it's not unlike the mystery of calling both the 396 and 402 the "400").
